Colombian women

Today, I want to share the incredible resilience of Colombian women.

For much of our history, especially after the Spanish conquest, women were confined to the domestic sphere. Pursuing an education, building a career, or simply imagining a life beyond the home was, for many, considered a violation of the social norms strongly shaped by the Catholic Church.

For women from low-income backgrounds, life was even more challenging. Many experienced sexual violence and became mothers without the support of a partner. Being a woman, a single mother, living in poverty, and facing social stigma was an overwhelming burden.

These circumstances left deep scars on many families. Generations of children grew up in poverty, with limited access to education and, in many cases, in environments where violence and physical punishment were part of everyday life.

Fortunately, Colombia has changed. Today, women have greater opportunities to pursue an education, start businesses, take on leadership roles, and shape their own futures. Yet thousands of women who are the primary providers for their families continue to work tirelessly every day to create better lives for their children and their communities.
